A scrappy and dsappointing performance with a distinct lack of quality from both sides.

We started brightly and it didn't take long for us to get into our stride. A corner from Molly was met by Smith but his nod down was just a yard too far in front of Hutch. Their attacking policy was simple. Smash it long to the number nine, get a knock on and go for goal. Sadly, for them, they hardly got a sniff. Evans had him in his pocket for much of the game and although it failed time and time again they persisted thinking that their luck might change. It didn't. Meanwhile we were pressing forward and Mahlon cut inside, had a decent shot which their keeper saved but it went to Jed. He hit it towards goal, it hit the keeper's legs and bounced over but the ref blew for offside. I couldn't see who was offside though!. Undeterred we pressed forward again. We were having some joy with Jed and Romeo down the right and Molly and Bennett down the left but it wasn't quite falling to us. Romeo hit a cross to Smith which went on the Molly on the left and his cross was nodded over by Smith. Pearce made a good run forward and the ball forward to Smith was knocked on to Bennett but he was just a yard away from the ball.

A free kick from Jed on the left fell to Ben in a decent position but his shot went over. Another long ball found Smith who nodded it on to Bennett who took one touch but shot over. And so the half ended goalless.

GR would have been fairly pleased with the first half display but would urge more threat when we were going forward. They realised that the long ball to the donkey number 9 was not working and they should try something else. They did have more enterprise to their play, played a little bit of joined up football but still really didn't threaten. Their best chance came from a corner. There was bit of ping pong in the box but we eventually smashed it clear. There was a decent cross by Romeo which found Bennett on the edge of the box. He sensed Molly running wide of him and hooked the ball to him but his good shot was tipped over by their keeper. It was time for fresh legs. Off went Smith and Bennett and on came Bradshaw and Mitchell. We had a bit more bite in the middle and bit more running and pressing up front but we were constantly let down by a heavy touch or a poorly placed pass. They huffed and puffed but did not really threaten whereas we thought our moment would come. Sadly it didn't. We even took of Jed and Ben and put on Bod and Fergie but we just couldn't get a break in front of goal. The closest we came was a good ball to Bod. He shielded the ball well, rolled his marker and hit a decent ball across the box but there wasn't anybody there to take advantage. Even with five added minutes we never really created a clear chance and the game ended goalless.

Bart was solid and assured and had little to do. Romeo had a solid game on the right, a decent shot in the first half and was reliable. Hutch was dominant and Pearce never let the side down. MOM went to Evans. He was solid in defence, hit some great passes up field and looked every bit the defender/midfielder influence. Molly looked good on the left and put in a good shift. Woods was better than Tuesday...he really couldn't have been worse!....and played some good passes. Ben was good in parts but his enthusiasm boils over sometimes with several poor touches. Bennett was good in parts and Jed was busy but rarely a threat. Smith tried hard but his chances were few and his threat was limited. Bradshaw looked busy but didn't have a shot on goal and Mitchell was busy and solid but rarely a threat. Bod tried hard and Fergie put in some decent crosses but they came to nothing.

This was always going to be a tricky game and we have all seen us get beaten by a poor side like this. However, we rarely looked threatened and were defensively sound. We lacked a little creativity in midfield to get behind them and lacked quality up front. Still, it was clean sheet, a useful point but we know we can play better. Tuesday at Kenilworth Road will be a tougher test!
